I LOVE to travel and see new things. I’ve got the travel bug for sure. Wanderlust. I’ve been to lots of places and even lived abroad, but there are some places close to home that I have never seen. Alabama is one of them. We are getting ready to start our school year and this year I’m teaching the states. Adventures in U.S. history! I can’t wait. It’s going to be a fun year.
I ordered a lot of state travel guides and we’ve been paging through them this summer. Alabama is looking good! It might just be our next road trip!
The food alone makes me want to go there. First of all. Three little words. Fried green tomatoes. And how about two more. Irondale Cafe! Did you see the movie or read the book? I did and LOVE them. Fannie Flagg, is the niece of the original owner of Irondale Cafe, and her novel, “Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café” published in 1987. And now I would like to taste the title! The fried green tomatoes at The Irondale Cafe are legendary, and the restaurant serves 600-800 slices daily! I need them in my life.

I decided I couldn’t wait and tried to make my own Fried Green Tomatoes and Alabama White BBQ Sauce. They were good. We devoured them. But, they only made me want the real thing even more.
I used this recipe for the tomatoes.
And here’s how I made the Alabama White BBQ Sauce. It’s all creamy and tangy and peppery. So good. Cant wait to try it in Alabama.
Combine 2 cups of mayo, 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar, 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp white sugar, 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper and 1 tablespoon of black pepper. Whisk until smooth. Put on chicken, fries or tomatoes of course.
Alabama has beaches, historical civil rights landmarks, exceptional restaurants, BBQ traditions, and diverse flavors! Plus, it’s full of Southern charm and hospitality! I want to go. It seems like a perfect vacation destination.
My family also loves BBQ, and the Alabama Tourism Department declared 2015 as “The Year of Alabama BBQ”. They say that BBQ in Alabama is THE BEST in the U.S. So, I kinda gotta check that out.
Explore all the Alabama road trips! They have a hole section on them. And I got lost exploring the food and BBQ! Alabama seems friendly, inviting and relaxed. And with all the historical sites, it is screaming field trip! Let’s go!
