bacon maple chocolate chip cookies

June 12, 2011 by Erin 17 Comments

Yes. It’s true. They’re real. And good. I made these for Kevin’s ‘man meat meat’ (a post in itself …. coming soon). They were strange. And tasty. Salty and sweet. Chocolate-y and bacon-y. A dessert with meat.

It’s not a new idea. I saw this place on the Food Network or the Travel Channel (my two favorite channels) called VooDoo Doughnut it Portland Oregon. (Flickr pics of bacon doughnuts here. ) (BTW – I think I’d love Portland!! – Have you seen Portlandia?? —- frickin‘ hilarious!!!) Anyway – They’ve been making maple bacon doughnuts for years!

We don’t eat very much bacon around here at all. But my husband adores it. (Actually I do too!) I know it’s terrible for you. Those pesky delicious swine with all the sodium and cancer causing nitrates. I occasionally splurge and get expensive nitrate-free bacon to make BLTs for dinner. But, here I went for actual normal bacon.

I think they would be great for Father’s day. A novelty cookie. All the men I know L.O.V.E. bacon. Maybe yours do too! I pretty much used this recipe. They’re fun and a great conversation starter! 🙂
You should make some for the men in your life. 🙂
I also decided to added some maple glaze to the top and stuck a piece of cooked bacon in it…..to let the unsuspecting consumer know what they were getting themselves into. 🙂 To make the glaze…I just mixed together powdered sugar and pure maple syrup until it looked like I could just pour it.

Bacon Maple Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup butter, room temperature
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon maple extract
  • 1/3 cup chopped cooked bacon
  • 1 cup bittersweet chocolate chips

Directions

  1. Preheat an oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt; set aside.
  2. Beat together the butter, brown sugar, and white sugar with an electric mixer until smooth. Add one egg; beat until blended into the butter mixture. Add the remaining egg, vanilla extract, and maple extract; beat until well blended and slightly fluffy. Stir in the flour mixture a little at a time, mixing just until combined. Stir in the bacon and chocolate chips. Scoop by rounded tablespoonfuls onto prepared cookie sheets.
  3. Bake in the preheated oven until edges turn golden brown, 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from the oven, and cool on a wire rack.

Yum. But I wonder how many I could eat without getting sick? I’d need an intense work out after just one.

Thanks for all the comments! The glaze on top was a mixture of maple syrup and powdered sugar. I just stirred it until it looked pourable. I had to add more syrup to make it that consistency. I didn’t measure – just poured. 🙂
