I am fairly convinced that no one wants to be over weight, out of shape, and unhealthy. It happens, yes, but I really believe that given a choice 100% of people would pick health over sickness. Every. Time.
So why then are there people who live everyday in a body and a condition they don’t want? I am talking about myself here too. What is it? I have a vision for what I want, I know what to do, yet when push comes to shove my couch wins more times than not. What about you? Does this sound familiar? Do you want something for yourself that is different from where you are now, have the knowledge, and/or internet access, to change, but somehow…year after year..nothing happens?
There are excuses, sure, none of them very good, but everyone uses them as a crutch. I want to get to the point of going from vision to action. From seeing and knowing what and where you want to be, and actually taking the steps to do it. If you can answer these questions and think about these principles, I think you will be headed in the right direction.
What motivates you?
I think it is going to be different for everyone. Everyone has a different reason for wanting to be healthy. Everyone is motivated a little differently. For me, I like the way healthy feels and I hate the way being unhealthy feels. Seems simple, but in the moments where I feel O.K., I have to really remember the nasty gross feeling I have when I stop working out, or eat bad food. Sometimes that’s enough to get me moving, sometimes I need more. Find out what really motivates you and hold on to it!
Focus, Focus, Focus!
When you set your mind to your vision, SET YOUR MIND TO IT! Have it there always! Keep reminding yourself why and how! Have friends that know you are trying to get healthy and tell them to encourage you when you want to stop. Tell yourself everyday. Make it a priority. It’s hard to hold on to your focus when the excuses pour in, don’t let them win! Stay focused!
Yo-Yo Exercisers are better than Couch Potatoes
I am a Yo-Yo Exercises for sure! Do I want it to become a part of my life, absolutely. But I fall off the wagon. My priorities get messed up and I lose focus. But, so far, I have always gotten back on track. And I think that’s the important thing. If in one year, I workout and stay focused every three months, get off track for a month, then repeat, at least I didn’t spend the whole year on the couch. Give yourself a break! If this is your 100th time starting a workout routine…good job…at least you are trying!
If you are ready to get moving again, or maybe for the first time…well…there’s no time like the present…Get to it! Set your mind to it and stay focused!
Heather blogs at The Healthy Hen, where she writes about being healthy in what we eat, what we do and how we live. She’s Mama Hen to 3 little chicks and wife to the Big Rooster. She’s passionate about being healthy and has a degree in Exercise Science. She believes being healthy is way, WAY, more than just eating salads and being gym rats. It’s about having fun and spending time with those you love, too. Going to the circus with your family can be just as healthy and good for you as running a 5k. Celebrating birthdays and watching your kids laugh is just as healthy for your soul as strength training is for your bones. Be healthy!
