I LOVE having a garden. Especially a square foot garden – it is SO easy. Everyone should have one. I decided to post a little garden update! Most things have grown really well, and some things have not. I’ve had trouble with the cucumber, the zucchini, the broccoli and the cabbage. Everything else is doing great. The lemongrass looks AWESOME! I might use it as an ornamental grass – it’s so pretty.
Here’s the garden two months ago…..
Wow — the tomatoes have gone CRAZY!! I have more tomatoes than I know what to do with. I think I will plant less of them next year, but two of the plants were supposed to be grape tomatoes – and they are NOT. š Oh well. Good thing I went to a canning class last month and learned what to do with all those tomatoes…….Salsa!!
Here is a little bell pepper…
A baby cucumber…So cute – but they have been this size for a few weeks now – they seem to have stopped growing. The stem of the vine looks kind of cracked and weird. Humm – any ideas? Boo. I was looking forward to making pickles with my new found canning knowledge.
A summer squash…
My favorite….our first little eggplant…And then there is the broccoli….nasty….something got it. Disappointing, since every day we check on the garden and Lucie takes a tiny pinch of the middle and eats it. We were looking so forward to the broccoli. I don’t think it is going to make it.
The other nasty thing is the cabbage…..GROSS….it looks like I am growing lace.
The zucchini didn’t make it either. It looked all gorgeous and healthy and big and leafy the whole time. I got three lovely zucchinis from it and then a few days later it was all wilted and rotting. š I pulled it out. My uncle says it sounds like I had beetles in the stem. Gross.
Lucie is watering her favorite plant….the bunny tails. It is a little grassy tuft that I bought from the greenhouse at the high school. I have two of them. I hope they come back and get huge – they are really cute.
Some of our bounty! Jalapenos, banana peppers and of course….tomatoes.

congrats on your bounty!! if we were closer we could swap cukes for maters in the next couple of weeks as my cucumbers are blooming like crazy but the neighbors keep taking my tomatoes & peppers š boo!! next year we are putting it in the back yard instead of @ the old property.
love your design, printing a pick to show dh what I mean.
Thanks for blogging!!

same thing happened to my zucchini. watch your squash as they will try to do the same thing to them! they are called squash vine borers. google it and watch you tube videos of how to get the grubs out…yuck! it did save my squash to do it though. they can get cucumbers too. i think that might have happened to mine as one of mine wilted the other day. i was trying not to use any sprays, but i did break out the sevin for the stems of my squash, zucchini, and cucumbers so to atleast have a harvest!

Dang squash vine borers!! I am no sure I want to know how to get the grubs out.
Kim…I can NOT believe your neighbors steal your veggies! That’s crazy. I wish we could swap cukes for maters!

Looks great Erin! So glad you did an update.
Have patience with the cucumbers, and give em lots of water!
I had squash borers get my squash plant and 3 of my cucumber plants..they were nasty. I still got plenty of harvest from both, more than I know what to do with, so I am not too sad..
Gonna make pesto tomorrow with all my basil…homemade salsa sounds soo yummy!!! Isn’t gardening great fun??
