I love, love, love this book.
It’s called Square Foot Gardening and it ROCKS. I’ve been wanting to garden this way for a few years and finally this year – I did it. Don’t the plants look so wonderful? It’s all pretty easy once you get the right soil mixture. The book tells you how to do it all. The bird is a very helpful little gardener and loves to water the veggies with me. Right now I have marked the plants with plastic forks that I wrote on with a Sharpie…but someday I will have these cool plant markers. They seem very expensive since I need a lot of them, so I will be making my own. I am in the process of stockpiling silverware from yard sales for this exact project. Stay tuned for that! I just love them – such a clever idea for plant markers. 🙂
Here is what we have planted this year…
Broccoli
Red peppers
Yellow peppers
Green peppers
Jalapenos
Sweet banana peppers
Eggplant
Zucchini
Yellow Squash
Beets
Cabbage
Swiss Chard
Kale
Purple Kale
Mustard Greens
Roma Tomatoes
Heirloom Tomatoes
Cherry Tomatoes
Leeks
Blueberries
Strawberries
Rosemary
Basil
Cilantro
Sage
Chives
Dill
Lemongrass
Sunflowers
Pumpkins
I’m so excited about our little garden. You can see my cool rain barrel that I got for Mother’s Day. It has a planter on top. I just love it. In the background near the roses you can see our Earth Machine composter. Such an easy way to compost. I can’t wait to start cooking with all the things from our sweet little garden. I just love this side of our house. It’s mine. 🙂

OOOO…we are going to do this too! I just read about it…why didn’t I know that you did it? Weird. I am going to have to come check it out. We are probably too late for this year though.
Wow. You went all out this year. I think I only planted 4-5 things, but you really outdid yourself! I cant wait to see it all in person. 🙂
Everything looks great! You’re a very tidy gardener. Our out-of-doors is kind of .. whoa. Wild. We always have these crazy gardens because neither of us has the ability to plant things in straight rows. I love the neat look of your space there. Enjoy all of that yummy stuff as it begins to roll in!
Thanks guys. It’s funny that I’m a tidy gardener – because I am the MESSIEST cook.
It looks awesome Erin! I’ve heard of this idea but have never seen it. I’m sure all of your fresh veggies will be delicious. I love the silverware garden markers from Etsy. I have been wanting some too and my Dad is working on making some. He just finished making me some really cool ones out of copper for my herb garden.
whoa. I could just stare at those pics for awhile and feel happy:) I love a tidy garden and I am lusting over your compost bin and rain barrel (next year for me:)).
Isn’t SFG the way to go? It is alot of work up front to build and mix the soil, but so worth it.
Did you make any cages to go over? Do you have rabbits/squirrels that get into your plants? How are you going to stake your vines? (cukes, squash, etc)
I have yet to figure out if I am going to do the whole rebar/netting support that he does in the book for my vining plants…there has to be an easier/cheaper solution!!
Thanks for sharing at “AP Tuesdays” So fun to have a fellow SFGardener!!
Wow! Love it! I would really like to see this on Modern Craftswoman Monday. Please link it up if you have time. Rory
Wow, It looks very lovely! When I am ready for a garden, I will definitely do the Square Food Gardening. Hopefully by then Amy (hint hint) would have another link party set up for the SFG bloggers! 🙂
What a lovely garden! Little hands love to help don’t they? I peeked at the Earth Machine website but it looks like you have to contact the company to get a quote… do you remember what they cost? I’m a big fan of square foot gardening and want to give it a try next year, so here I am pre-planning! Love your rain barrel too. Did someone make it?
Thanks everyone. The Earth Machine was a gift so I am not sure how much it was – so sorry. Also the rain barrel I bought through my city’s sanitation department. But I have seen tutorials online – I really like the wooden barrel ones too. It does seem pretty easy to make – it’s basically a garbage can with a few holes. 🙂
Such a cute garden. Saw it over at trendy tree house. I love the bright tomato cages. Adds some color while waiting for it to be covered with green.
