The resplendent production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The King and I, which opened on Tuesday night at the Aronoff Center, was spectacular. It was most impressive and worthy of every “wow”. The score is both romantic, beautiful and totally entertaining. The mesmerizing Elena Shaddow, as Anna, navigates skillfully between traditional culture and modern thinking. The opening scene deposits her, a Welsh widow, and her son, in Siam where she is to teach a palace full of royal children the ways of the West.
The role of the King of Siam, played by Jose Llana, adds spark and depth to the character. His voice was amazing and the chemistry between the two is unmistakable. The children are talented and adorable as well. The entire show was a perfect blend of humor and culture clashes that kept the audience spellbound. It’s a must see. Don’t miss it.
