So, if you’ve been around here long enough you’ve heard me mention Molly. Our big black beast. She’s a nice dog and we love her. But, Lucie REALLLLY loves her. I was feeling a little guilty because we haven’t taken her to the vet in a while. A really long while. (Bad pet mom.)
I worked at a vet in high school so I know that heartworm disease is horrible and potentially fatal. Plus it’s difficult and painful and expensive to fix. And I know that all it takes to contract it is one bite from one infected mosquito. YIKES
Heartworm prevention is so easy and safe and affordable…. and I just hadn’t gotten around to it. Bad excuse, I know. I wasn’t super happy with the experience we had at the first vet we used when we got Molly (one of the reasons I never went back! haha – I know another bad excuse.) So, I knew I just needed to go ahead and find a new vet.
I decided to try the Banfield Pet Hospital inside Petsmart. (Another plus is that Lucie gets to hang out with all the animals in the pet shop while we wait!) It’s so close to our house and I had heard good things. So, I made my appointment and went in. I can not tell you how great this choice was. From the moment we stepped foot inside Petsmart it was a great experience. Everyone at Banfield was so nice and helpful, and I ask a TON of questions. I’m inquisitive, OK!
Then we got to meet the vet. SHE ROCKED! She was so sweet with my dog and my daughter (who wants to be a vet when she grows up now). Dr. Nieman even brought out some text books to show us specific things inside a dog’s body. I mean, seriously, amazing. She was perfect.
Banfield also has these Optimum Wellness Plans which are just genius. You can customize your plan based on the needs of your pet, but they include physical exams, routine vaccinations, unlimited free office visits, service discounts and more all rolling into one affordable veterinary care package.
I know Molly is getting great care all year.
So, our visit went just great. Everyone was amazing. Molly got tested for heartworms. She’s healthy and happy. And she got to meet some cats. I see a cat in our future. But, I am allergic. 🙁
We went ahead and got her a ProHeart 6 injection which delivers 6 months of protection in a single dose! So, now I can forget about it for half a year! Connivence and peace of mind. We know she won’t live forever, but I could not imagine if I had to tell Lucie that Molly was sick and there was something as simple as a heartworm shot that I could have done to prevent it.

We have a zoo at our house. Five Treeing Walker Coonhounds and three cats – all rescues. Of course, I’d have more if I could, but between legal limits and the cost of food, vetting, etc. for everyone, I guess I’ll have to wait until I win the lottery and buy a farm. LOL!
