tuesday tip – green onions forever

January 26, 2012 by Erin 8 Comments

Did you know this little trick?  I didn’t!
So many of my recipes call for a stalk or two of green onion.  But, I don’t always have them.  I always seem to forget to buy them, just don’t think about it.  Well, not a problem anymore!  I read that you can just re-grow them!  (I can’t remember where I saw it – probably Pinterest….I would link to it, but Pinterest took the search feature off!  What gives?)

The last time I remembered to buy green onions for a recipe, I didn’t throw away the roots.

I stuck those babies in a glass of water on my window sill.

Three days later I had these.
A week later I had these!!

Green onions only cost about a dollar per bunch….so it’s not really about saving money as much as it is about convenience.  I like having them to throw on top of things.  A baked potato or a salad.  They add a nice splash of color and flavor to most foods.  Now I just snip a few whenever I want.  They grow SOOO fast.  I just rinse the glass and give fresh water every few days.  Really simple.  I love simple.

That is so great!!! I saw that on Pinterest too and now that I see that it actually works, I can’t wait to make a recipe that needs green onions!

Ahh! I just told Kara about this last night. Joe and I dislike green onions but I was so impressed that this was an option that I wanted someone else to do it. :o) Im so glad it works for you. Kara and I are wondering though if it makes your kitchen smell like onions.

Thanks guys! @Kate – I thought it would make my kitchen smell oniony too – but it doesn’t at all. You can’t even smell them. Even when you get really close. You have to really sniff them like flowers to catch the scent! 🙂
