helicopters and a parade

October 1, 2011 by Erin 5 Comments

I HATE it when Kevin has to work weekends.  BOO.  Today he left before 6:00 a.m. and won’t be home until after dinner.
But, we decided to make the best of it and seek out some fun free stuff to do.  Home Depot and Lowes each have fun free workshops for kids.  The Home Depot has theirs on the first Saturday of every month…… which happened to be today!!  Whoohoo!  (FYI – I think Lowes has one next weekend!)

So, to Home Depot we went.
They gave each child an apron, a pin (you get a different pin each time so you can collect them all on your apron), a tattoo, a coloring book and a building kit!
So nice.
Today’s kit was a wooden helicopter! The kids thought this was AWESOME!
I basically had to build them both and just let them hammer the nails in once I got them half way in.  They did a really good job hammering once I got them started.  (I was kind of surprised.)  Then they got to paint them.  So much fun.  It’s a great free activity – you should go!
Nice form Sam!  haha.
The bean is watching the bird intently to see what he did wrong.  (notice the red mark on his forehead….clearly a hammer accident)

Nothing makes these kids happier than a project!  Well, maybe candy….candy and a project!  🙂

The other awesome free thing going on today was our local fire department’s open house!  Now, an open house doesn’t actually sound that fun – I know – but words can be sooo deceiving!  It’s the best!  It’s way more than just an open house and it’s actually such a big deal that they only do it ONCE EVERY TWO YEARS.  And it was TODAY!   WHOOHOO!  We are so lucky.  🙂
Of course they have tours of the fire house and the fire trucks – but also………free food (Gold Star) and drinks, chair massages, balloons, fire hats, about 40 booths of local businesses giving good things away, police horses and dogs doing demonstrations, police cars and cool boats, SWAT team vehicles, ambulances, a little house the kids get to go through that they use for fireman training (they loved this), a big wooden house cut-out with fake flames that you get to shoot at with a huge hose, an ACTUAL fire that you get to extinguish all by yourself with a big fire extinguisher (Lucie loved this part – Sam not so much) and the VERY BEST PART…….6 REAL HELICOPTERS!  We got to see them take off and land and then we got to get in them.  It was a great time.
We had a fun helicopter filled day.
The bird wanted to try out each helicopter.  The bean was a bit nervous.
Look kids, pipe bombs.
It was very exciting (as you can see from Lucie’s face) and loud (as you can see from Sam’s hands)!
The bird taking care of the bean.  Awww.  🙂
And last night we went to the homecoming parade with my Aunt and Uncle.  My cousin was on a float!  And later on today we are going to a birthday party for a friend’s little girl.  Great weekend – even though Kevin was absent.  🙁   Boo for dumb nurse shifts.  But, yeah for free fun!

We now have a bag full of parade candy.  Tootsie Rolls, anyone?

That looks like so much fun! I hate missing out on things like that being overseas, but I’ll live vicariously through you for a bit. 🙂

Thanks guys! @Laurie – When I called they told me that the helicopter one was good for ages 2 -6. But they clearly told me wrong because the instructions on the kit said not intended for ages under 6. haha. And I did all the work. I saw kids under 2 and kids over 12 there. It was a wide range. It’s really good for any child. The older kids could do it alone. 🙂

And then, of course, you did Floor Bed. A total success of a weekend, I’d say! I still laugh when I think of you saying “freaky family bed people”. haha.
