homemade fruity play dough

August 4, 2011 by Erin 1 Comment

(He was making hilarious dinosaur noises.)

(I like how the Strawberry Shortcake girl is under an umbrella lounging – completely oblivious to the T-Rex! haha)

It is hot here. I mean HOT! I don’t want to go outside unless we are going to a pool.

So, today we made play dough. I remember my mom making it with us when I was a kid. I did a quick google search for recipes and millions came up. I went with this one because I had all the ingredients! (I mean, cream of tartar, really? who has that? what do you even do with it if you aren’t making play dough?) I also liked it because you could bake your little creations to save them if you want. We didn’t bake them today, but I can see us doing just that with this play dough later. Maybe even this week!
Today the kids had way too much fun playing with their dinosaurs and other plastic animals to make any creations that we could bake. They happily played with this non-stop for over an hour!! I know – I was shocked too.
The recipe is…..
HOMEMADE FRUITY SMELLING CLAY
2 cups salt
4 cups of flour
2 cups of water (or less)
6 packets of Kool-aide (or food coloring)
Mix up all the ingredients (except the kool-aide) until they are the consistency of clay. I added the water a half cup at a time and didn’t end up using the whole 2 cups. (Add more water if it feels dry and more half flour/half salt if it seems too sticky! 🙂 Makes sense.)

Then I separated it into three balls. I added two packets of orange kool-aide to one, two packets of black cherry kool-aide to another and two packets of grape kool-aide to the last. And I mixed it all up.
IT SMELLS SO GOOD! Seriously.

I would’ve added more kool-aide to get more brilliant colors, but 6 was all I had.
Be sure to keep it in a zip-lock or air tight container in the fridge when you aren’t playing.
If you want to save your creations, bake them in a 250 degree oven for 30 minutes. I can’t wait to see if they still smell so good after they’ve been baked.
Check out this old post for more fruity kool-aide art fun. We don’t drink it, but we do a lot of projects with it. Good old kool-aide. Gotta love it!
