iris

October 26, 2010 by Erin 4 Comments

Iris, our Easter Egger chicken, has finally laid an egg!
Easter Eggers are kind of the mutt of the chicken world. They have some Americauna bred in them somewhere down the line and they all lay pretty eggs. The egg colors range from all different shades of green to blue and rarely I’ve heard…even pink! But, each chicken lays only one color and you don’t know what it is until they do it! It’s like a chicken surprise!

Iris has taken her sweet time about the whole laying eggs thing. I even thought she might be rooster more than once. She’s either a hen who doesn’t lay or a rooster who doesn’t crow.

So, Saturday we went out to get our daily egg from Myrtle and low and behold there were two! It’s such a pretty blue and looks so cute next to Myrtle’s brown egg. Nice work Iris!

Monday when Lucie and I went to collect the eggs and she went over to Iris and patted her on the head and said quietly, “Good Job Iris, I’m so proud of you!” heehee. It was pretty cute! Now if only I could do something about our other two free-loading chickens.

When can I come over for an omelet? Lucie is too cute with her comments.
