We just love finding new and interesting things to do when we travel. We went on a little mini-break to Bowling Green Kentucky recently and one of our favorite stops was The Lost River Cave. If you are traveling anywhere near there or through there, you must get there. There was so much to do.
They have nature trails, a natural spring, a Junior Naturalist program, Bird Bingo activity sheets, Geocaching with pre-programmed GPS units, a Nature Trading Post where kids can trade interesting items, Treasure Mining, A Junior Tour Guide Program, A Butterfly Habitat, A Discovery Cave Crawl, the best gift shop EVER, and of course the Cave Boat Tour.
Lost River Cave’s nature-centered activities and programs will inspire you and your child and encourage them to learn more about the natural world.
My kids really loved the treasure mining part. Panning for gemstones was really exciting. They found Rose Quartz, Amethyst, Pyrite, Amber and Horn Coral. Along with the bag of treasure filled sluice material, they received a key card that helped them identify their new treasures.
The underground boat tour was amazing. It’s Kentucky’s only underground boat tour! The tour began with a walk in the valley and our guide shared the stories of the blue hole and disappearing Civil War soldiers. As we walked closer to the cave entrance we got to hear more interesting history, including tales of Jesse James. Then we boarded the boat at the cave entrance. We had to duck in the boat at first as we went under the low wishing rock and then the passage opened into an enormous cathedral-like cavern. Crazy fun!
The kids also really loved the Nature Explore Outdoor Classroom. It’s an awesome nature-scape for playing and learning. It has a Fox Hole, Nature’s Art Studio, 3 Sister’s Garden a Giant Bird Nest and more!
So, I know you want to go! Click here for hours and ticket information.
You’ve got to put this place on your bucket list. And it’s not too far from The Kentucky Down Under Adventure Zoo, so you could check both of them off in one visit, like we did! (I love checking things off of the ole bucket list!)
