Stinky Car Solutions

June 1, 2015 by Erin 18 Comments

Do you have a stinky car?  Please, tell me it isn’t just me?  We can’t seem to keep this thing clean.  Even with our very strict “NO EATING IN THE CAR” policy.  (Yeah right, that lasted all of a week.)  I mean, sometimes you just have to eat on the run.  And that means crumbs and forgotten cups and wrappers and fries.  Gross.

I came up with a little hack to keep that under control.  I bought a cereal container with a lid from the Dollar Store (for ONE dollar, holla!)  I put extra baggies in the bottom and then lined the container with another baggie.

Now, the kids put their garbage IN the container instead of on the floor.  It’s working.  So far, so good!

But, the car still smells.  Spring sports and swim lessons overlapped with each other, so we have a TON of equipment in the car at once.  And, it’s been super rainy here, so everything is kind of damp and moldy.  That adds a lot of nasty to the aroma of our car.

Seriously, check out what I have in back of the car right now!

Welcome to my car hoard.

2 damp swim towels, 1 damp sports chair, 1 damp raincoat, umbrella (also damp), nasty old shoes, damp soccer cleats, socks and shin guards, 1 bag of wet swim stuff, golf stuff, more soccer stuff, tee ball stuff, sweaty hat, pool toys.  Nice, right?!  Disgusting.  We do clean it out, but then we have to bring most of it back in.  So, it kind of smells no matter what.

But, I found another solution.  I started using a new PERK Visor Wrap.  It is awesome!  Our car smells so good now.

PERK

Every time we get in the car, my kids breath in deeply and sigh, “Oh, it smells so good in here.”  Which is a really nice change of pace from the previous moans and gags of, “Oh my gosh!  What is that smell?!”

I’m really liking the visor wrap because it’s simple, I just wrapped it around my visor.  It isn’t bulky and it blends right in with my car interior.  It won’t spill or leak and the StediScent technology delivers consistent fragrance.  The scent doesn’t fade.

They have several nice pleasant scents.  We went with Caribbean Colada and it’s just right for summer.

PERK products can be found at Walmart, Target, Advance Auto Parts, AutoZone, Meijer, Kroger, Pep Boys, Publix, CVS and other places that auto air fresheners are sold.   Use this $1 off PERK coupon to save.  Check out PERK’s Facebook for up to date news and deals.

My husband works at a water treatment facility. He wears a clean coverall over his work clothes to drive home but the smell is like an abandoned latrine. NO DEODORIZER has helped yet unless you put your nose right on the deodorizer and take a deep breath in (short term fix). Just printed out the coupon and am leaving now to pick up one of these.

A few other ideas I came up with, in case that doesn’t work:
      1) A seat cover that can be taken off to wash
      2) A DIY febreze spray (uses your favorite clothes softener)
      3) A dispersing candle – it melts based on temperature, instead of with a candle
      4) It’s POSSIBLE he might can be hold of one of those blocks that are often put behind an outhouse toilet to prevent stink. (We had one once; it was so strong, we had to place it in our trunk!)

Oh, man! I wish this had the option of Editing, but I didn’t see one if it does. Right after hitting Post Comment, I saw an idea that inspired me! Someone was putting silicone muffin holders in their car cup holders to prevent spills, which is a great idea! But then I thought: Do that, but put a little melting TART inside one that is rarely / never used! This way, it will leave a nice smell behind, whenever the temperature heats up in the car (which is when the stinky smells make their way to your nose!).

Three dogs and my niece’s muck boots that she wears to work in the barn. Somehow she always forgets to take them out of the car on hot days.

I have a question about the cereal box garbage can. Wouldn’t it tip over, unless you used Velcro to hold it to the floor?

Mine doesn’t tip over very often. There is usually something beside it. 🙂
