We did a fun, cheap and easy project yesterday. (My favorite kind.) We made peanut butter bird treats. The poor birds are so cold and hungry. So, we made them some treats.
What you need.
1 loaf of bread (on sale at Kroger yesterday… 75 cents)
1 jar of cheap peanut butter (also on sale yesterday….1.60)(sorry birds – you are not getting our good stuff – hope you like partially hydrogenated oils – hahaha)
Cookie cutters (on hand – we chose spring shapes)
Yarn for hanging (on hand)
First, Lucie cut out the bread with the cookie cutters. She liked the bunny the best, I liked the bird!… of course.
She then used a straw to make a hole for the yarn.
Then we let them air dry so they were hard. I helped this process along by putting them in the oven for a few minutes.
Next, I put a piece of yarn through each one.
Then came Lucie’s favorite part….The peanut butter. She did lick the knife after each spread on the toast. I think she ended up eating only a small amount of bird seed. She is a bird after all – so I guess its OK. After we spread one side of the shape – we pressed it into a plate with bird seed on it. Then repeated with the other side. It was kind of messy, but fun. And through out the whole process Lucie kept repeating, “The birds are so hungry, thank you birds for being patient!” hehehe. I guess she thought it took a long time.
Sam liked to play with the cookie cutters and watch us. He also got his chubby little hands on one of the (pre-peanut buttered) toasts. He really enjoyed that!!
