This was another easy gift I gave for Father’s Day… A pair of ceramic travel cups that look like paper cups and a mason jar filled with freshly roasted coffee beans. I looked up how to home roast and found SO much information. This site Sweet Maria’s has some easy to follow steps and helpful links. Coffee Bean Corral has the process spelled out nicely, too. My favorite set of instructions was this one from Coffee Geek. It has very helpful pictures, and his first paragraph made me want to try it even more….
“Beyond getting my first fairly decent espresso machine, my first real introduction into how good coffee could be has to be the day I discovered I could home roast with nothing more than green coffee, a hot air popcorn popper, and a metal colander.”
I went to Good Will and found a hot-air popcorn popper. You might even have one sitting unused in your cabinets! Just make sure the heat vents are on the side of the popping chamber – not on the bottom. Bottom air grate equals fire hazard. It was so easy and the coffee is SO good – plus you save money! BONUS! I got the green beans online for about 4 dollars for a full 16 oz. pound…(not the 12 oz. fake “pounds” we buy at the store.) I got them here at Caracolillo Coffee Mill – they are so nice there – they even sent me two giant burlap coffee bags free with my order. I can’t wait to think of something cool to do with those. 🙂 Roast some coffee at home – try it out. It’s a thoughtful gift for a coffee lover or the person who has everything!
