This girl. She loves bugs. And she loves projects. So, I just knew she would love this lesson. Homeschooling is so fun! I am loving it. (Of course, it’s only October of year 1!) 😉 But, so far so good!
We used The Orkin Ecologist site to research some of the scariest and deadliest insects from around the world. It was a science and geography lesson in one! And it’s almost Halloween, so it tied right in. Love it when that happens.
Perfect and CREEPY and CRAWLY and SCARY!
It was so fun to research for this project. The Orkin Ecologist site has a lot of great information and fabulous photos. The kids wanted to see every single picture. Twice. Some of them were really creepy. (for me) It’s a surprisingly fantastic educational resource for both novice and experienced science lovers. You have to check it out. You’ll be so surprised. Leave me a comment if you do! I would love to hear about what you think after you visit it.
The kids favorite insect that we researched was the Goliath Bird-Eating Spider, for sure! (It was great that the dollar store had a giant hairy tarantula to depict that one on our map.) These suckers have an 11 inch leg span! And you can hear their hissing from 15 feet away! CAN.YOU.IMAGINE?? I would freak. Thank goodness their venom is not harmful to humans. (and that I don’t live in South America with them.) Inch long fangs would hurt, though! You can even watch a video of this giant catching a mouse on the The Orkin Ecologist site.
What we used:
- foam core board (dollar store)
- a map (on hand)
- a bag of plastic bugs (dollar store)
- glue (on hand)
- internet for research
What we did:
- First I cut the map out so that it would fit on the board.
- The kids glued the map to the board.
- We researched what deadly insects lived in which countries and continents.
- Then the kids glued the corresponding bugs to the map.
- They labeled the insects with a black marker.
They are so proud of their creepy, crawly board.
Orkin Ecologist is even on Pinterest. You can follow them here and check out a bunch of other scary, creepy, crawly insect project ideas. (plus a lot of cute and clever not scary ideas, too!)
